Why Technology Without Purpose is Pointless

Yeah I know…the title’s harsh. But its need to be said.

Below is a chart showing the explosion of technology mediums from the 80’s to now.

In case you forgot: this is the age of amplification–where news, opinions, and reviews go further and faster than ever before. This is both good and bad. It’s good because if what you’re offering is great, with just a little bit of communication, you can get it in to the hands of people quicker. But, its bad if what you’re offering sucks. [1]

One of the errors people in sub-par ministries have is this belief that “better technology can get us out of this mess!”

Wrong!

That’s like saying, “We’re headed off the side of a cliff. We’re not getting there fast enough–let’s get a car! That’ll get us there quicker!”

Technology is a Servant, not a Savior

Technology doesn’t resurrect dead ministries–great leaders with purpose do. That’s not to say technology isn’t important–quite the contrary, its very important. I believe that certain ministries (because of their demographics and who they’re trying to reach) need to be on the cutting edge. But it needs to be purpose driven and principle centered, not technology driven and centered.

Technology has to be used prayerfully and purposefully; it is a tool of ministry not the savior of ministry.

Technology in line with Purpose

Technology must be used in line with the ministry’s core purpose. If the technology being used is not in line with that purpose–get rid of it!

But let me ask you a few questions: why are you using Twitter? Do you need to be on Myspace? Does your ministry need a blog? You’re going to do a podacst, why? You need a vlog you say, is it in line with your purpose? Are you measuring your social media ROI

What I’m simply saying is this: step back and assess. If there’s no purpose, get one. Is your supporting leadership weak? Clean house (replace all the weak leaders with the strongest you can find)! Create a culture where the truth can be spoken, heard, and fought for.

Remember: Technology without purpose is pointless.

What are your thoughts?

  1. By “sucks” I mean the dictionary definition of “objectionable or inadequate.”
