Jesus and Biblical Marketing

We said yesterday that Biblical marketing differs from conventional marketing. Here’s how:

  • Conventional marketing says, “Tell people how great great you are; Biblical marketing says, “Let others say how great you are.”
  • Conventional marketing tries to find the best ways to get people; Biblical marketing finds the best ways to serve people.
  • Conventional marketing focuses on a good products and services; Biblical marketing focuses on great products and services.

And so on.

So the question that comes up is: “What would Jesus do?”

What Did He Do?

It was simple.

He said Who He was and He allowed people to say how great He was.

That’s it!

There’s a saying: “If you want people to believe you’re funny don’t tell ‘em you’re funny. Tell a joke!”

It’s not your job to tell people how great you are–that’s reserved for the people you’re serving. It’s you’re job to tell them who you are.

And if you’re serving people the way Jesus did you’re gonna “have a lot of ’splaining to do!”

    You said that he allowed others to say how wonderful He was. In some cases (e.g. the woman at the well) this is true. But in other cases, such as the cured demoniac, the ten cleansed lepers, and those sent ahead two by two, He did more than simply permit this. He directed and we might say scripted this activity. In another scripture, it is written, "his voice was not hurt in the street“. His focus was not on promotion, but neither was it on closing the sale. Jesus was a teacher, a cultivator, a shepherd, while his disciples seem to me to have played the roles of closers. For example, if we read John 3:16, where is the close? How many of today's evangelists would have had an altar call, or sold a book, or baptized or something?
  • Hmmm....good points...but I would have to disagree on some of them. For the cured demoniac (if we're talking about the same story) he told the man to tell the world all the works God had done. Of course, this gets tricky cause He was God...but He directed most praise to the Father not Himself. Same thing for the lepers.

    In fact, Jesus astonishes me because He told most people NOT to tell others. I'm not sure if He had a strategy behind this ("if I tell them don't do it that might make them do it more")

    But I also think He was a closer. There are numerous times He was closing the deal ("come unto Me" "do you believe in the Son of Man" and etc)

    But those are just my thoughts...and I'm glad to have heard yours.

    Mike, the issue of whether Jesus did or did not function as a “closer“, as well as a discussion of his missionary marketing organization, is a big topic and worthy of its own thread. I'll try to do a bit more research and post something in the next week or so on that topic, rather than hijacking this thread which deals with prospecting and the sowing of ideas. In the meantime, I'd be happy to converse with anybody by e-mail.
  • It is a big topic indeed...email wouldn't do it justice...it would have to be an in person "combat." :)

    I was referring to the story in Luke 8. Jesus told the cured man to return to his family and tell what great things have been done. The man was given a specific defined market and a script, and we read that he went further than he was directed and published it throughout the region. This idea of a scripted message and a defined target market recurs many times. For example, above I said that the woman at the well was not directed to tell others, but I was wrong about that. Jesus said, "go and call your husband ".
  • This is very true and testimonials are the best way to go about it! Let others say your product is great by showing them satisfied customers.
  • Exactly!! A satisfied customer is more credible than an ad anyday. :)
