How important is listening in your ministry

…or business?

I went to the doctor yesterday for my annual check up. One thing I could never understand about going to the doctor is waiting for a few hours to be seen for a few minutes!! Nevertheless, I went.

When I finally got to the see the doctor I saw about three times (I don’t call him “my doctor” because I doubt I’ve ever had “a doctor”–one to call my own that is) we went through pleasantries and he got around to the fact-finding:

“So Mr. Holmes, how are you?” the doctor asked.

“I’m great doc, how are you?” I replied.

“I’m fine…fine. So…what’s new in your life?”

“Well…my son’s turned into a man…he’s two now. And I’m thinking about getting him a job!”

(A quick chuckle between the two of us)

“So the last time you were here was August, has anything new happened in your life?”

“Uhhh…no…nothing really else.”

(Didn’t he just ask me that?)

“So what do you want done”?

“Well, I just came to get a TB shot…and…oh!…could you check my sugar?”

“Sure, sure! We can get all of that done.”

(A few minutes pass and he asks me more questions)

“So…Mr.Holmes…anything new going on in your life?”

“………not to my knowledge doctor…anything new going in yours?”

“No every thing’s good. Alright wait outside and we’ll call you to get your TB shot.”

“And check my sugar, right?”

“Huh?? Oh right, right, right…the sugar…we’ll get that done too. Let me put that down here…by the way…anything new happening in your life?”

So…do you see how important listening is?

We’re in the age of social media. We’re ideas, comments, and etc are spread fast and quick. These social media tools give a microphone to broadcast our message. But…it also gives us an opportunity to listen more intently.

My question is this: how can learn to hear more about what’s being said? What methods and tools do you use to get feedback?

I want to hear your responses.

And by the way…how’s everything going in your life?
