How important are E-books for Christian Writers

TV has gone digital.  Music has gone digital.  Movies have gone digital.  What are you waiting for to make your book digital?  Do you have a book you wrote in the 90’s?  Well, let’s re-release it.  This time let’s try something different.  Offer it digitally.  The results will increase more than your pockets.

E-books are great as a marketing tool.  But it is a marketing tool that too needs to be marketed.  E-books are very flexible.  Rather than carrying a big box of heavy books, just bring your laptop, PDA or, even, your mobile phone.  Email it or text in seconds.

Would you rather read a hard copy of a book or directly from your phone?  Why?

In our current microwave generation, we want everything fast.  An e-book can make things easier for the reader to skim through, search for keywords, change the font size, or print specific sections.  Overall, an e-book is more flexible and functional.

For the customer who wants product NOW and doesn’t want to wait 2-3 weeks for shipping, the e-book is a dream.  Just search, find, pay, download and read in minutes.

For the writer, this is a much more cost effective method.  There is no mass printing or fulfillment cost.  For the reader, instead of installing more bookshelves, just free up some space on your hard drive.  Sometimes an entire collection can fit on one CD.

  • Although I own quite a few ebooks - I agree with MarketingIntegrity - the ebook still has a way to go, but depending on your message and your audience it could be very beneficial to release an ebook. The ebook is still less respected than print - right now I think an ebook is more appropriate for writers who are trying to build a list of people they will market to at a later time.
    I'm currently in the process of considering my publishing options and right now the printed book is still my first choice for optimal results. An established publisher will be able to get the book the exposure and credibility that I need for my particular purpose.

    I have checked out Mr. McTyer's website, and it is truly a very innovative way to promote ministry. I will definitely bookmark this site for future reference.

  • I prefer both. I agree with all your comments about the immediacy, flexibility, and efficiency of e-books. E-books are definitely the way of the future...and the present for some. They are not yet ready to replace the printed book...even if in some ways I would like them to be. I have spent the last 20-years working for a publishing company...and surprising as it may seem, digital sales are still less that 5% of total sales for all books. As e-book readers become more technologically sophisticated e-book sales will grow. E-books will eventually become mainstream...but for today they are still the way of the future.

    I am personally excited about the Ipad and the possibilities it hold for readers like myself. Though I love a good paperback I can't wait to see where this will lead.
