Why Leaders Should Never be Comfortable with “Comfortable”

I’m not a morning person. I have to set my alarm earlier than necessary because I know I’ll hit the snooze button several times each morning. Why? Because the bed’s comfortable. I’m more comfortable staying in bed than getting up, taking a shower, and beginning my day.

A lot of leaders are stuck in the bed. They’re comfortable with past progress, the people around them, and drawing a pay check. They’re comfortable with the life they’ve made and have no aspirations for getting out and continuing their journey.

Quite possibly, comfort is a leader’s biggest adversary.

When we get comfortable, we quit dreaming about the possibilities and settle for completing responsibilities.

When we get comfortable, we stop pushing others towards greatness and begin preventing them from progress.

When we get comfortable, we become more concerned with pleasing people and more tolerant of displeasing God.

When we get comfortable, we cease the push for excellence and are more than satisfied with mediocrity.

Leading people is hard work  especially if you do it with excellence and integrity. It seems like staying put in your comfort zone is the easiest option. The great leaders, however, are never comfortable with where they are. Their passion for progress and growth keep them moving forward.

No matter where you are right now as a leader, be sure that you’re uncomfortable. Too much depends on you being so.

What do you think?

  • Didn't mean to hurt you. :) Yeah, the mentality that most people have is that comfort is the goal. As Christians and as leaders, that should never be the ultimate end. Usually, comfort means we're stagnant and stagnation means we are beginning to rot. We must keep moving forward even though it's not always easy. Keep pushing Kiesha...when God wants you to be comfortable, He'll call you to home! :)
  • I'm thinking - ouch- you stepped on my toes! I don't even know how many times I hit the snooze button this morning :) But you're right - when you're comfortable, you don't what to disrupt that comfort. It just feels so good to be in that place - but you're right there is too much at stake.
Unfortunately, a lot of people don't realize this - they think the goal in life is to get comfortable and once they're there - they aren't willing to move.
  • First and formost, I want to thank you Jonathan for an awesome post! It is enriching, edifying, and informative.
